Paper for World LiteratureThis is not a research paper. You do not have to use scholarly sources in it, though you are free to do so if you wish and using sources might give you insights into your subject and enable you to talk about it with different perspectives. Three pages in length, double or 1.5 spaced. For the content, you will retell a myth you have selected. It can be any sort of myth; from our class you know, I hope, that myth can include ancient myth such as Greek myths as are outlined in Hesiod’s Works and Days and poems like The Odyssey; and it can include modern myth: superhero tales, Hunger Games, Star Wars, and many other items from popular culture. It can also emphasize multi-culturalism. You can pick a myth or story from world culture, from Chinese to Native American to African—the possibilities are huge. Once you have selected a myth to discuss, retell the myth and then talk about how it relates to the culture it represents, the values it endorses, and how it plugs into the general definition and shows the features of myth that we have talked about in this class. Remember that some of the myths will fit those paradigms perfectly, some will vary; these are things you want to talk about in your discussion. Also, bring your own judgement into the story. What did you like about the myth? Why do you think it became a myth—that is, what was about this story that appealed to people so much that it became a part of their particular culture and people kept returning to it as a story of value?
